Program Approach

The GEF UNDP/SGP in India is implemented country wide as a Full Scale Project (FSP). The project document is attached for reference and as learning for perspective partners for the type of issues it prioritizes. The proposals for accessing the grants needs to be submitted by Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and Community based organizations (CBOs) and the Non- profit Organization as per the template to the respective regional offices of the CEE.
       The GEF UNDP/SGP program anchored through the Country Program Manager (CPM) of the GEF UNDP/SGP based in New Delhi is supported through a more decentralized system of Regional Offices of CEE in order to reach out locally to the remote, un-reached and inaccessible poor degraded areas of the country, forest tribal communities by the national parks, protected areas and wildlife sanctuaries etc. It aims to provide a countrywide coverage and to also address the local issues and national priorities more appropriately. Small Grants Programme (GEF UNDP/SGP) globally in 122 countries is funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) as the corporate program of the GEF is executed by the United Nation Development Program (UNDP), on behalf of the GEF partnership. In India the program is hosted through the National Host Institution (NHI) i.e Centre for Environment Education (CEE) as the responsible party for the GEF Small Grants Programme which is being implemented under a full scale project of the GEF by Ministry of Environment & Forest, (MoEF) Government of India (GoI) and executed through the United Nation Development Program (UNDP).

The principle objectives Of GEF UNDP/SGP
Develop community-level strategies and implement technologies that could reduce threats to the global environment if they are replicated over time.
          Gather lessons from community-level experience and initiate the sharing of successful community-level strategies and innovations among CBOs and NGOs, host governments, development aid agencies, GEF and others working on a regional or global scale.
      Build partnerships and networks of stakeholders to support and strengthen community, NGO and national capacities to address global environmental problems and promote sustainable development
