National exhibition of forest based products (NTFPs) by SGP partners:

Given the success of Green Haat organized by the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF), Govt. of India and with support from UNEP, at Dilli Haat last year in 2011 from 1st to 5th June 2011, the MoEF, GOI decided to have it again this year 2012 the GREEN HAAT, with the duration extended to 15 days from 5 days in 2011. The national exhibition of forest based products (NTFPs) was organized by the MoEF from 1st to 15th March, 2012 at the Dilli Haat again. The marketplace showcased non-timber forest produce both agro processed and crafts mainly in the following categories.

  1. Forest Handicraft
  2. Herbal & Medicinal products
  3. Forest based food items

Like last year, this year also stalls were put up by 19 GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) partners of UNDP/CEE along with GOI partners based on the above categories. It also showcased the impacts from the GEF-SGP projects in terms of conservation and livelihoods.

The GEF SGP partner NGOs were able to generate an average sale of Rs. 55,000/- per day (by all partners) over the 14 days of selling that took place. The total sale was around Rs. 9.5 lacs by these GEF SGP partners. Around 10,000 people visited the Dilli Haat during these days on an average every day. All GEF SGP partners were able to sell their full stocks and many of them have received bulk orders also to supply some of their products like Herbal Tea, Honeys, Cosmetics, Rice, Arecanut Leaf plates, Bamboo Handicrafts, Pickles, Organic Pulses, spices etc.

Some of them also got some good linkages for the marketing of these products and a sustainable marketplace to sell them. The NGOs expressed that the demand of these forest products in Delhi is really good and they will be preparing in a very good manner with more product for the next year.

Two of the GEF SGP Partners also received special awards from the MoEF, GoI for their stalls with Sarjana Samajik Evam Sahityik Sansthan from Madhya Pradesh winning Best Biodiversity Stall and Uravu Indigenous Science and Technology from Kerala winning award for Best & Unique Handicrafts.
