Enhancing
Livelihoods and Conserving Mountain Environment in Marginalised
areas of the Himalayas |
Grant Amount: Rs.14,94,222
The practices of extracting excessive biomass from the forests and poor
land management have begun to threaten the fragile mountain environment
of the Himalayas. Traditionally, people in the hills have been dependent
on the forests for meeting their energy needs and on an average the per
capita consumption of wood per day is 2.5kg. The project area, Village
Pinswar, is 18kms away from the power grid lines. Excessive degradation
and loss of forest cover in this valley have triggered recurrent landslides
and floods which have taken away many lives and caused many a severe damage
to property.
Fighting against the challenges this village poses such as lack of basic
infrastructure, remoteness, poverty, limited livelihood opportunities
and forest degradation, the NGO proposes to provide the people of this
village, through this project, the means to a stable and sound livelihood
through the use of renewable energy. For this, they propose to set up
a Micro Hydropower plant that will generate enough power to electrify
all the village households. 25KW of hydropower and productive applications
of electricity would enhance the income of the village by more than Rs.17
lakh annually for 113 families. This Plant will be entirely community
owned and managed. They propose to process the nearly 5 tons of wool locally
produced with hydropower. Local small-scale power carding, spinning, calendaring,
etc. will be undertaken for additional income. Since there is a local
demand for good quality woolen yarn, this can be produced using a powered
spinning wheel. Also, all the milling work can be done with the help of
the hydropower plant which will save people from going 15kms away to get
their milling work done.
Energy efficient cook stoves will be installed in all the houses for
further reducing the consumption of firewood, 350 tons of which is being
used otherwise annually. This will reduce the consumption of firewood
by 50%.
Besides, capacity building and skill development measures will also be
undertaken.
