Sustainable biodiversity conservation in the Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve (KBR), West Sikkim

Grant Amount : Rs.6,50,000

The project area is of tourist attraction and the number of tourists is on the rise. Some tourism related pressures this area faces are excessive fuelwood use, use of the forests for camping and most significantly, garbage disposal. The NGO, therefore focuses on bringing about a system in waste management . In an attempt to prevent non-biodegradable waste from being littered in the reserve area, a nominal entry fee will be charged and a close watch will be kept on visitors. The money got through fees will be used to fund biannual cleanup campaigns. To encourage tourists to bring back the non-biodegradable waste, 50% of the hire charges will be refunded. Under the project, a Visitor Information Center (VIC) will set up to sensitise visitors about the values of biodiversity. The NGO will advertise the Centre through different media.
