Purpose of the project was to conserve the locally available germplasm through people’s participation. The project was framed to generate faith and confidence in local population about the effectiveness of traditional healthcare practices and the importance of local germplasm. It proposed the identification and multiplication of medicinal value plant species and seed varieties that are useful for specific microenvironments and create village level gene banks, where seeds of different varieties available in the region would be maintained for research and multiplication.

The project intended to protect and propagate the indigenous seed verities adapted to the local conditions and thus protect the biodiversity of the area, training of the farmers for preparation of the organic manures, collection and propagation of seed verities to the farmers and marketing of organically growing indigenous seeds as a high value product. The purpose was also to establish a seed bank and formation of Self-Help-Groups to ensure the variability of production and marketing of indigenous seed verities.

“Promoting Animal Husbandry as Sustainable Livelihoods for Rural Women leading to Ecological Conservation”

The proposed project is intended to conserve the bio-diversity by reducing the grazing pressure on forestland, reduce the fuel-wood pressure by promoting biogas as a means of cooking energy, strengthen the groups of rural women for conserving environment & bio-diversity and improve their livelihood sources. The major activities involved are to build the capacity of the community; especially women to enhance their income from animal husbandry by promotion of green fodder cultivation through demonstration and extension work, promote vermiculture for better manure and pollution control and arrange credit inputs to the community for animal purchase.

The projects objective is to generate awareness among the people on the issues of biodiversity develop pastures and plantations so that degraded biodiversity could be balanced. Develop a good database on the local crops and their seeds as a gene bank and form a community based system to manage the natural resources through capacity building, strengthening Village Development Committees (VDCs), training and exposure programmes of VDCs, nursery raising, plantation of local species in the community land, agriculture fields and on private land, collection of information of local variety of agriculture seeds and the cropping pattern, demonstration on improved variety crops.

It also involves livestock and agriculture development, improved composting techniques and mixed cropping/inter-cropping practices, formation of Self Help Groups (SHGs) and training on Natural Resource management (NRM), formation of Participatory village natural resources development & management plan and capacity building of NGOs/GOs to establish suitable techniques of watershed management.

"Strengthening traditional livelihood system of desert community through Agro-forestry and Horticultural practices"

The project attempts to solve the condition of agriculture in the project area. Attempts to bring more area under cultivation has failed and this, coupled with droughts, depleting water resources and mechanised farming, have aggravated their socio-economic condition, forcing small and marginalised farmers to shift from their traditional livelihood system and have become wage labourers. The practice of agro-forestry & horticulture among small & marginalized farmers will be popularized and intermediate technology in the practice of agriculture, particularly in areas of irrigation & manuring will be promoted. The NGO will incorporate the components in the present agricultural practices, promote intermediate technology and enhance the process of technology transfer from lab to land through information- sharing.

Restoration of Biodiversity of sand dunes and their worth in the economy of desert area

The project undertakes to empower the desert community for revival of appropriate vegetation on dunes (traditional and economic) and demonstrate suitable practices for land-management as model of sustained agriculture and allied production on sand dunes and inter-dune fields. For this, the community will be organized as a chak Samittee. Water resources management system in the chak will be strengthened through vegetative protection of water courses, building water harvesting and collection structures (Kunds/tankas) and re-establishing water flow in channels through the concept of Participatory Irrigation Management Practices. A study of the different approaches tested and adopted in the area will be made. Horticulture plantation will be implemented and desert vegetation including grasses will be encouraged. Outreach programmes will include capacity building of adjoining villages & PRI members.

Sustainable and Equitable Natural Resource Management in Onkar Watershed


Grant Amount: Rs. 1495990/-

The project aims to restore biodiversity and provide a sustainable livelihood to the people. For this, they will check habitat fragmentation and destruction, by undertaking a series of soil and water conservation measures such as check dams, gully plugging, stone bunds. They also propose to develop common and private pastureland by restoring its biodiversity through appropriate conservation measures. Organic farming will be promoted, local species will be protected, fuel wood species will be planted, livestock health camps will be organized, training for women’s groups and for village leaders will be conducted on biodiversity conservation. They also propose to bring about socio-economic development through interventions in agriculture and animal husbandry and promotion of people’s institution.

Comprehensive Model of Biodiversity Management in the Aravali mountain Ranges in Bhindar block, Udaipur district, Rajasthan

Grant Amount: Rs. 1531000/-

The NGO undertakes to establish a comprehensive model of biodiversity conservation and management by strengthening people’s institutions to sustain conservation efforts. Their major activities include development and protection of pasturelands - common and private; and development of individual private plots, plantation and seed sowing, construction of dry stone masonry boundary wall and construction of check-dams for effective soil water conservation in upstream areas of watershed. Through pastureland development, they hope that increased production of grass will help farmers start dairy activities that will provide additional income. To further strengthen this process, they undertake to set up and strengthen milk collection centres and aid some families purchase breed animals with support from the bank. In addition, the project undertakes to construct low cost water harvesting structures to recharge some wells for irrigation and renovate some old wells with good potential for water. Finally, they undertake to promote mutual learning and share experiences with other like-minded agencies and successful programmes through exposure tours.

Strengthening Role of Panchayat in Re-establishing Biodiversity in Southern Aravali Hills

Grant Amount: Rs.15,04,440

The project area receives scanty rainfall and is therefore suffering from agriculture related problems, low availability of grass and fodder and continued degradation of the forest. This project therefore proposes to organize village community and the Gram Sabha members into an Awareness group which will follow village level awareness camps with Panchayat representatives and villagers. Information on biodiversity in the area will be collected and ways to restore it will be discussed. Training of community leaders on Biodiversity Conservation in Beed Management will be carried out and besides activities such as, exposure visits and nature walks, training of teachers and Ward Panch are also proposed under the project. It also includes demonstrations on how to develop site plans to support biodiversity in specific wastelands and how to stabilize wastelands through soil and moisture conservation. The community will also raise a low cost nursery for indigenous minor fruit and medicinal plants. Some local species will be propagated through direct seeding, root suckers, grafting, etc.. Grasses will be identified and their nutritive values will be established. The sites will be provided with regeneration of wastelands and SWC measures like tree basins, staggered trenches and gradonis to support pasture development.
