Innovative GEF SGP Project in partnership with AIRBUS Corporate Foundation and Raliegh India.

 

GEF SGP through Centre for Tribal’s and Rural Development Trust (CTRD) in Gudulur  block of Niligris district has developed and innovative project  titled “Promoting and adaption of renewable energy by Installation of Bio-gas units in tribal and other deprived villages of Gudalur Block of Nilgiri District” encouraging the alternative energy sources in the poor, unreached tribal areas of the country.

 

Nearly 80 personnel from AIRBUS Corporate Foundation (ACF) amd Raleigh India have participated in 4 separate expeditions to the project sites.

 

CTRD, the local NGO partner through Mr Ranganathan has been instrumental in facilitating this process of community leadership in the project. Kindly see the brochures attached for more details.

 

In the project nearly 75 Bio gas units 75 cowsheds and 150 livestock annually will be provided to the beneficiaries through institutionalized village self help groupls (SHG members) till 2013. Till today 25 Biogas units have been done along with 25 cowsheds and 50 animals provided. The principle of  community cost sharing is at the front edge. The AIRBUS  will be contributing nearly 70,000 USD in cash over 3/4 years and nearly 1 million USD in terms of in – kind co-financing.

 

This innovative project of the ACF under their CSR initiative encourages their own staff to spend 3 weeks in the field areas of CTRD learning on the ground realities, on local biodiversity issues, poverty reduction and livelihood probabilities for the poor tribals and also enabling the hands on construction of the BIO gas Units and cowsheds etc...

 As of today the 25 Bio gas are saving nearly 100 MTS of wood each year and thus in resulting in checking 180 MTS of CO2 emissions every year.
