World Heritage Celebrations
To mark the World Heritage Day (18th April), GEF UNDP/SGP, CEE is involved in implementing a week-long event from 18th to 25th April at Qutub Minar which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in New Delhi city. The important organizations/Departments who joined hands with CEE are – National TV Channel ND-TV, The Archeological Survey of India (ASI), Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF GOI), Department of Environment – Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi, Moser Baer Trust, Boeing International Corporation India Private Limited, Intel Semiconductor Limited, ArcelorMittal and Earth Day Network.
On 20th April 2012, ND TV in collaboration with Toyota as a mark of their Annual Event “A marathon 1500 kms - Green Run (Greenathon-Toyota Event) from Delhi to Mumbai was organized and flagged off by the Hon’ble Minister of Environment & Forests, Government of India, Ms. Jayanti Natarajan as well as Mr. Kartikeya V. Sarabhai, Director-Centre for Environment Education. Two popular Bollywood actors – Milind Soman and Rahul Bose and their team, along with Group of Indian Territorial Army officials joined in the race which will complete the journey in 30 days. About 200 children from 5 schools, the teachers along with CEE colleagues, the media and officials of ASI were present today to mark the occasion. Out of 30 stops nearly at 16 stops the GEF/SGP partners will greet the Racing Group on their way to Mumbai to link greening activities. The entire week-long event is aimed at raising awareness and sensitizing the school students – Youth of India, on various issues related to Environment, more so biodiversity and Indian Culture and Heritage. This event is also to ensure a low carbon lifestyles program.
In all, a total of 1500 students from 30 schools are taking part in this event on a rotational basis. Every day, at least 200 students and teachers take biodiversity protection Pledges to be showcased in the COP 11 meeting, NC and the SGP team are sharing ways of how to protect biodiversity, participate in Painting & Quiz competitions, sports activities, with active detailing given of various monuments by ASI officials. This Event will be clubbed with the Earth Day Event on 22 April 2012 for which a separate arrangement has been made and the details will be shared with you after the Event.
